ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CONCEPTS

The project has been designed by Portuguese Architect Mariana Barbosa Mateus.

The existing building and its unique qualities were the starting point for the design strategy. The street facade and front patio are fully retained together with iconic elements such as stone arches and window frames, interior doors and tiles. Keeping and reusing these elements preserves the memory of the history of the house.

The entrance for each home is through existing timber doors framed by the old stone arches, 3 of them via the existing front patio and the fourth through Rua Afonso Sanches.

Although most of the interior of the existing building is rebuilt to achieve high quality standards of construction, the layouts of the 4 houses encapsulate some of the grand spaces of the existing house, such the front rooms to Rua Afonso Sanches or small courtyards that become now private.

The design of the homes promotes the connection of interior spaces with the outdoor areas, particularly with the new rear façade that creates larger openings to capture views of the gardens and Cascais.

The materials palette retains the connection to the original building: whitewashed walls, stone, timber, tiles, durable and timeless materials.

The Design Team

BM Architecture

BM architecture is based in Lisbon and was founded in 2017 by Mariana Barbosa Mateus to deliver projects with architectural ambition that are respectful to their cultural context and site. With an approach that is lead by design but also pragmatic, the studio aims to work collaboratively with clients, colleagues, consultants and all users of architecture.

Before founding the practice, Mariana Barbosa Mateus worked with Manuel Aires Mateus in Lisbon (2006-2011) and in London with Sergison Bates (2012-2013) and 6a architects (2013- 2017), where she became an Associate Architect in 2015.

The studio is currently delivering a different range of residential projects that include a new building in Marvila with 30 apartments set in a vibrant artistic and industrial context, a Student Accommodation building just across Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics and several apartment refurbishments spread across Lisbon and Cascais.
